If you are looking for a relaxing beachfront retreat, look no further than the sandy beaches of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. This coastal city is located on the Atlantic coast of South Carolina. Just 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, this slice of paradise is the perfect place to go to escape the busy pace of day-to-day life.

Hilton Head Island may be small but this beachfront area has everything you need for every member of your family, including fine dining restaurants, fantastic boutiques, luxury golf courses, and of course, miles of sandy shorelines. If you prefer a more active day, take a ride along more than 50 miles of nature trails and bike paths.

With all that Hilton Head, South Carolina, has to offer, it is clear to see why Conde Nast Traveler Magazine ranked Hilton Head the number 9 island in the United States in their 2011 Best in the World Reader’s Choice Awards.

Hilton Head Island wasn’t always the coastal hot spot that it is today. Paleo Indians originally inhabited this area, often referred to as the “Low Country.” Early settlers understood how desirable this land was and as such, the English, Spanish, Scottish, and French all fought for this piece of land.

In 1521 English settlers led by Francisco Cordillo inhabited Hilton Head. In 1663, Captain William Hilton of England named the stretch of land Hilton Head. The area switched hands in 1698, at which point it became part of the Kingdom of Ireland. Ownership changed hands again in 1729. The U.S. Military has also found Hilton Head Island to be extremely valuable during the Civil War, World War I, and World War II.

During these busy years, an Episcopal church and many cotton plantations were built on the oceanfront land. Complete accounts of this rich history can be seen when you visit the Coastal Discovery Museum.

Technically, Hilton Head is a barrier island located just north of Savannah, Georgia. Hilton Head Island features the Sea Pines Forest Preserve, which has a shell ring that has been dated to be more than 15,000 years old. This ancient ring is believed to have been built by the original Indian inhabitants to delineate the area in which they lived. Today is it one of only 20 rings in the world like it.

This small town offers everything that you may be looking for in a coastal vacation, right down to the red and white striped lighthouse that guides boats to its welcoming shores.
